Molecular studies of metabolic regulation and human disease

Dr. Yoon's laboratory is interested in the roles of intercellular signaling pathways in the regulation of cellular metabolism and their impact on physiological and pathological processes, with a particular focus on diabetes mellitus.  In addition to type 2 diabetes, less common types of diabetes due to specific genetic defects are being examined.  Another area of interest is the contribution of mitochondrial defects and inflammatory processes to the development of metabolic disease.  Large-scale genetic screens in muscle cells have been performed to isolate regulators of mitochondrial function and some of the identified genes are being characterized.  Human and mouse cell culture and genetic mouse models are utilized.
