Profile Introduction

Research projects in my lab focus on plant diseases caused by fungal and oomycete pathogens. We use various host plants that include tomato, pepper, and Arabidopsis, orchard crops such as almond, peach, walnut, and pistachio, and nursery ornamentals. Our interests generally are mechanistic with a strong emphasis on cellular, molecular and biochemical aspects of the plant-microbe interaction. However, we also explore disease etiology, epidemiology, and management, particularly in our orchard crops projects.

Research Interests

General areas of emphasis in my research program are the biochemistry and molecular biology of plant-microbe interactions and diseases of orchard crops. Recent or current research projects include: lipid-based signaling in defense networks and programmed cell death (apoptosis) in plants; signal interactions in induced resistance to pathogens and insects; abiotic root stress in predisposition to diseases caused by Phytophthora spp.; and fungal diseases of orchard crops and perennial hosts. I also serve as the Director of the western region of the National Plant Diagnostic Network, a consortium of plant diagnostic laboratories at land grant universities and state departments of agriculture with support from the USDA-NIFA to enhance agricultural biosecurity in the U.S. (see http://www.npdn.org)
