Phi Sigma Honor Society - Gamma Delta Chapter

The Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society was founded in 1915 at Ohio State University. With 86 active chapters and a total membership of more than 90,000, it promotes academic scholarship in the Biological Sciences and recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence and involvement in scholarly research. The Gamma Delta Chapter was established in 1984 by a group of students and faculty members. They wanted to provide recognition to outstanding undergraduate and graduate UC Davis students. Among the founders are Dr. Barbara Horwitz, past vice president, and Dr. John Horowitz, past treasurer.

The criteria for nomination to the Gamma Delta Chapter are greater than most chapters. At UC Davis, a minimum GPA of 3.5 is mandatory for undergraduates. This GPA requirement is significantly higher than the national requirement of 3.0 and is a reflection of the high caliber of students at UC Davis.

Gamma Delta Chapter Board Members - 2021-22

President - Raj Sandhu

Hi everyone! My name is Raj Sandhu (she/her) and I’m a fourth year biological sciences major. I’m very excited to be serving as your president for this school year. A little bit more about me is that I really like to watch and play basketball, especially with my family. I also really love to watch movies, so any new movie suggestions are always welcome! I can’t wait to be back in-person and meet everyone, if you ever see me on campus feel free to come and say hi!

Vice-President - Prashant Naidu

My name is Prashant Naidu (he/him/his) and I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve as your Vice President for the 2021-2022 school year. I am a 4th year Biological Sciences major with a minor in Community Nutrition. Currently, I am part of clinical research as a Research Associate with the Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program. Beyond school and research, I absolutely love cooking and nutrition (primarily plant-based meals), trying new coffee places (I love local coffee places and trying to find the best specialty espresso drinks), and spending time with my friends and family. I am a huge fan of spontaneous adventures and I love exploring new places locally and afar. Fun fact; I’m an EMT & have worked in-patient Emergency Medicine, Trauma, and Critical Care. We are so excited to welcome everyone back to campus and I cannot wait to meet you all in person!

Secretary - Esha Urs

Hi everyone! My name is Esha (she/her/hers) and I’m a fourth year Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major. I am humbled and excited to serve as your secretary for the 2021-2022 academic year! I’ve been interested in signal transduction since high school, particularly in networks involved in maintaining homeostasis and/or coordinating immune responses in plants and animals. Currently, I am exploring these interests via my ongoing work in the Dinesh-Kumar lab. Outside of lab, I love hiking, swimming and kayaking (fun fact: I took a week-long kayaking trip where I travelled down the California coast and camped on adjacent beaches). I’m also a huge movie enthusiast and am always eager to give/accept recommendations on movies and film classes available at Davis. I’m very excited to welcome you all to Phi Sigma and to campus in the fall!

Treasurer - Charan Karthik

Hello! My name is Charan Karthik (he/him) and I’m a 4th year Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior major with a minor in Sociology. I am very excited to be serving on the Phi Sigma board as your Treasurer for the 2021-2022 school year. I am currently a part of the Trimmer Lab at UC Davis where I focus on doing molecular biology work and assisting with monoclonal antibody projects. Outside of school and work, I like to go out to eat, hang out with friends, travel to places, and go to the gym so that I can keep going out to eat more.
