Dr. Chadwick presents: "Three Stories about Methane Metabolism in the Archaeal Domain of Life"

About the speaker: Dr. Chadwick is an Assistant Researcher working in the lab of Dipti Nayak at UC Berkeley and an Instructor in Math and Geology at Mount Tamalpais College in San Quentin State Prison. He studies the biochemistry, physiology, and evolution of methane metabolism in the Archaea.

About the seminar: In this seminar, he will describe some of the latest developments in the field of methane metabolism. First, Dr. Chadwick outlines our latest understanding of how certain Archaea can reverse the methanogenesis pathway to facilitate methane consumption. Second, he will share some of our ongoing efforts to assign functions to hypothetical proteins found exclusively in methane-metabolizing Archaea. Lastly, he will describe the isolation and characterization of a novel methanogen that acquired methane metabolism via horizontal gene transfer.
